Going Green Means Saving Green at Pennsylvania's Markets
In our "green" conscious society, homegrown, recycled and re-purposed are words we hear often. Add to these the current economic climate, and it is not difficult to see why farmers and flea markets are as busy as ever. Not long ago, even the suggestion of shopping at a consignment or thrift store would have been met with protest, but now it's cool for teens to shop at secondhand clothing stores. It is recycling in a very practical and hip way.
FLEA MARKETS
Along the same vein, flea markets are found in every county of Pennsylvania. "One man's trash is another man's treasure" is not only a familiar saying, it is the very foundation of many market stand-holders.
Who knows? You may really find treasure, like the Philadelphia man who found a first printing of the Declaration of Independence hidden behind an old picture he bought at an Adamstown flea market. The $4 frame turned into $2.4 million treasure when it was sold at Sotheby's auction in 1991. The chance of that type of windfall is practically nonexistent, but there is a good chance you'll find a bargain.
FARMERS MARKETS
If you really want to discover the essence of a town, visit the farmers market. Markets in small towns and large cities are snapshots of the community. At Philadelphia's historic Reading Terminal Market, produce, meats and handmade items from all over the world mirror the city's ethnic diversity. Small farmers markets like the one in Lititz, Lancaster County, feature produce, baked goods, meats and cheeses from local farms that surround the community.
Purchasing fresh-from-the-farm produce is environmentally friendly in many ways. Organically grown fruits and vegetables are increasingly popular and are readily available at market. And, buying fresh produce eliminates much of the packaging that ends up in landfills.
